Sweet Land of Liberty

It is really hard for me to believe that November is half way over!  Where does the time go?  I am a sentimental girl and there are so many reasons why I love November.  November holds so many positive memories for me.

Our school has a school wide veteran's assembly every year.  This year, we held a parade for our school community Veterans.  Kindergarten worked on tissue paper flags to hold during the parade and because we are currently studying American symbols.

My little learners need constant reminders about our rules. We revisited our rules this week as we read We The Kids and wrote our class constitution.  The book and our conversation really lent itself to vocabulary development.

We have been reading non-fiction text about the American symbols this week and working on writing 2 facts we learned through interactive writing.  Today, while our book buddy class was visiting the chart was on my teacher table because we still need to talk about the Bald Eagle.  One of my more active little ones told his book buddy all about the Liberty Bell using the pictures and words!

We are still working on understanding how our predictions change with more information.  We listened to a story about the Statue of Liberty and predicted about which liquid would cause the copper in the pennies to change.  We are practicing patience as we observe the changes!

We had variety in our predictions so it will be interesting to see how they react to the changes as well as their original prediction.

In Kindergarten, everything revolves around birthdays and celebrations.  I love Oklahoma history and since Oklahoma history is covered by third grade and we are book buddies, we planned a party!  I made invitations.

We decided to make a class book with facts about Oklahoma using letters of the alphabet.  The third graders did the research and wrote the facts.  Kindergarten wrote the letter and helped illustrate the picture.  Their work will be published in a class book for us to enjoy!  We listened to the story S is for Sooner to help support our learning.

We also listened to Oklahoma, the state song, as well as Oklahoma Rising as we drew pictures to illustrate our favorite thing about the state.  We enjoyed cookie cake and punch this afternoon!

This week my Christmas Cactus bloomed.  Sometimes, the littlest things can totally make my day!  It blooms once a year so I dutifully water and care for it even when I don't always get to enjoy the benefits of the work.  Teaching is very similar.  It is often times in the day to day action to see the impact that love and care have on the little ones.  Paperwork and long hours make it hard to remember.

Everyone loves Christmas but I really relish in the act of Thanksgiving and it is one of the things I love about this month.  There are opportunities to be thankful and it is important to remember to celebrate them no matter how small or insignificant they might seem in the moment.  My paternal grandpa was a Veteran, history buff, and an Okie.  One of the things I absolutely love about teaching is the ability to make memories with children.  My memories with my grandpa are near and dear to my heart but most of them involve the smallest things.  I am thankful for memories that inspire and hope that some of the sentiment that I share with the little ones is meaningful enough to them to remember long after they leave me.
