We have been reading lots of Snowmen books including the Snowmen At Series by Caralyn Buehner. I had never shared these books before but the children have really loved them! We have been working on comparing and contrasting stories using Venn Diagrams. We compared the stories Snowmen at Night and Snowmen All Year. My class really enjoyed Snowmen All Year. While we were listening to the story, they were commenting about how fun it would be to watch fireworks with a snowman.
This a picture of the Venn Diagram that one of my team mates, Katheryn Thai, completed with her class using interactive writing. My class has not finished theirs because in the last 6 school days, I have been out 2 for professional development! I love that her class included the similarity of the fact that both books were works of fiction because that is something that my class is currently very interested in during read alouds.
We made snow globes last week! This was a multiple step process and helped us practice following directions. My class still struggles with this at times especially when there are multiple steps!!
The first step was having children paint with white tempra paint and qtips in a circle that I drew with a pencil. The black construction paper for the snow globe was already attached. Children also used qtips to paint the plates. I took children's pictures during outside recess and cut around their bodies. The last step was having children write about why they like snow. We use a poem each week to practice our fluency. We read the poem daily and use it to introduce and work with high frequency words, rhyme, etc. On Fridays, we illustrate a picture and the poem is taken home in our poetry folder to read to our families. Last week, our poem was about a snowball that melted when a child thought they could keep it. As we worked in our poetry folders, I asked children to think about why they liked snow. It was interesting to see their justification for why they like snow and that they were all able to have a valid reason why they liked it.
The next one is one of my favorites because this little learner struggles with his letters and sounds so when he wrote the j for the sound of g in angel, I was not going to burst his bubble of confidence because he is so very unsure of himself in most instances.
I really would love some snow to fall for a few reasons. I want the children to know that it can snow when it isn't Christmas because my learners wanted to know why snowflakes were hanging up in. My room when they came back from Winter break because Christmas was over. There is also the fact that this teacher wouldn't mind a date with the pajamas and my couch. What's your favorite thing about teaching during the month of January?
